Campfire and mountains in a diamond on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A campfire with orange and red flames and brown logs sits at the base of a diamond-shaped panel. Above it, blue mountains, green hills, a line of pine trees and a yellow sun fill the background. Bold black outlines and flat, saturated colour fills define the design, which is centred on the forearm.

Her grandfather had taught her that a fire is not kept by wanting it. You feed it what it asks for: split ash for the first flame, pine for the spit, heavy oak last and never first. On the ridge above the tree line she found two walkers, a boy and an older man, shivering under a torn tarp beside a dead stove. The boy stared at the tin as if it held a lantern.
She could have walked on. Instead she knelt, cupped the coal in dry moss and breathed until it caught, then built the fire the way she had been taught: a tight cone of kindling, the logs crossed like a hinge. The flames climbed higher than she meant them to, orange at the base and a sharp red at the tips, and the hills behind them turned green in the light.
At dawn she walked down with an empty tin and a heavier pack, the old man's knife tucked into her belt as thanks. Smoke rose from the ridge behind her, a thin grey thread against the paling sky, and she found she was not cold at all. Halfway down the path she stopped and looked back. The thread was still there, and someone had already stacked more wood beside it.
