The first frost had already silvered the fence posts when Maren found the bear in the woodshed, curled between the birch logs with its nose tucked under one paw. Its coat was not brown. In the lamplight it shifted from teal to green to a pink like the inside of a mussel shell, and when she breathed on the cold window, small white specks drifted through the glass as if someone had flicked ash off a pipe.

"You are letting the cold in," the bear said, without opening its eyes. Maren had expected to be frightened and found she was only tired, the way she was tired every evening after the sheep were counted and the pump was thawed. "Grandfather said you only come in winter," she said. "He said you owed him a debt." The bear sighed a sound like wind through a gap in the boards. "Your grandfather owed me a great many things. The sky used to sit low over these pines, close enough to snag on the tops. A hunter's wife cut a strip of it to stitch a coat for her son. I have been wearing the stitches ever since."
It wanted walking up to the ridge before the thaw, where the pines grew thickest. Maren took the lantern and the bear padded beside her, its shoulders brushing the frosted ferns. Above the trees the sky rippled in slow green folds, and the bear's flanks rippled to match, so that she could not tell where the animal ended and the heavens began. At the top the bear lifted its head and the light poured off its back and spilled over the valley, and stars came loose from its shoulders and rose like sparks.
At dawn the woodshed held only the birch logs and a single white fleck stuck to the bark. Maren pressed it into her coat seam, where it stayed through the spring melt. Each frost since, she has stood at the window longer than she needs to, watching for a dark shape walking north with the sky folded over its back.
