Mountain landscape within a head in a knit beanie

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A head in a knitted beanie and checked scarf is outlined in bold black lines, with the face area filled by a mountain range, a small cabin and pine trees. A teal sky sits behind the peaks, while the beanie and scarf are shaded in grey and black. The tattoo fills most of the frame on a leg, with the skin edges visible around it.

Pass me the kettle, and mind the third stair, it talks back. You want the true version, not the one the carriers tell down in Harrow Dale? Then sit where the draught can't reach you. Old Abel Varnick kept the hut above Caddon Pass for forty winters, and every November he knitted a grey beanie for whoever came up the valley road half-frozen. He never asked their names. He only asked which way they'd come.

One year a stranger came up in the last of the light with a checked scarf wound three times round his throat and a map drawn on the back of a bread wrapper. He wanted the ledger, the big book where keepers had written down every peak and pool they'd ever named. Abel gave it to him without a word, and the stranger turned the pages until he found a ridge with no name at all, only a little drawing of a cabin under the snowline and a pencilled word, 'home', crossed out twice.

They sat up half the night arguing about that ridge. The stranger said the lake under the peaks was the colour of a kingfisher's back, and Abel said it was the colour of his late wife's kitchen tiles, and neither of them would give way. At first light the stranger pulled on the beanie Abel had left on the chair, tugged the scarf tight, and went up the path without looking back.

Abel watched until the figure was a dark mark on the white. Then he took up his needles, cast on forty stitches, and began another hat for the next lost soul, because the ridge would still be there, and so would the cabin, and so would the argument.
