The brother who taught you to mix pigment never once looked out of the window while he worked, which you took for piety until the third week. Now you stand on the scaffold with lime plaster drying under your thumbnail, and the abbot's instruction is plain: paint the valley as it appears from the cell above the lake, so the visiting bishop can admire the mountains without the cold of climbing them.

You begin with the peaks, because they are easiest to get wrong, and by noon the pines have marched up the slope in their dark ranks. Ochre for the sky, then the vermilion you were warned not to waste. At dusk the real light comes through the old lattice of diamond panes and lies across your work in a thin gold line that shifts every time the wind rattles the shutter. You mark it with a fingernail and carry on.

On the last evening the abbot climbs up to inspect. He says nothing for a long time, then asks why you have left the centre of the lake unpainted. You tell him the water is already moving outside and you have no pigment that can keep up with it. He looks from the wall to the window and back again, and for once his mouth does not tighten.

He sends for the other brothers at vespers. By the time the bell stops, the whole refectory is standing at the glass, and nobody is looking at the painting at all.
