Hut, crescent moon and skull on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a hut on bird-like legs, topped by an onion dome with a cross, with a crescent moon above and pine trees beside it. Flowering stems frame the central design and a skull sits at the base. Bold black outlines and solid black fills on the roof and dome are softened by fine grey shading on the skin of the leg.

Vera had been walking since the bread ran out, and the forest had long stopped pretending to be ordinary. The pines stood in rows like clerks who had lost their ledger, and the path kept folding back on itself. When the hut came stalking through the trunks on two scaled legs, she was almost glad. At least something was going somewhere.

"Wipe your boots," said the hut, which was not a thing huts usually said. Its shutters swung open on a kitchen full of lamplight. Above the roof the onion dome caught the light, its small cross bent a little to one side, and a crescent moon hung so low it seemed to snag on the chimney. The old woman at the window had a face like a walnut and a bone charm on a cord at her throat. She did not explain it.
"You have my silver needle," she said. "Your grandmother borrowed it and never brought it back."
Vera had not known she had a grandmother who sewed, let alone one who borrowed needles. But in the grass beneath the hut's feet, a skull lay with its jaw open as though it found the whole arrangement very funny, and she understood that asking questions would cost more than the needle.
She gave it back. The hut knelt, the old woman nodded, and by morning Vera was standing at her own village gate, the church bell ringing for the first time in her life as if someone had remembered to wind it.
