Mountains and sun tattoo on the forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A tattoo of two mountain peaks under an outlined circle representing the sun, with the lower parts of the peaks reflected in horizontal wavy lines. The mountains use soft grey shading with dark solid areas, while the sun and water are drawn in thin linework. The small design is centred on the inner forearm against a dark background.

The lake at the top of the Harrow Pass never lies about the peaks. My father used to say that, standing on the shingle with his flask, as if the water were a witness he had called. Every morning before the post cart came up from Scarrow, he walked down to read it, and every morning I went with him, counting the ripples that crossed the reflected ridge like columns in a ledger.

The winter he died, the water stopped showing the north face. Two summers of rain had softened the ridge, and the reflection came back broken, the lower slopes smeared into grey. I did not tell the men at the inn. I walked down alone at first light and sat on the stones with the sun still hidden behind the col, drawing what I could see on the back of an empty seed packet.

On the third morning the sun cleared the col and laid a bright seam across the water, and the reflected peaks came up whole, sharp as cut paper, every wave line in its place. I stood so quickly that I dropped the packet in the shallows. It drifted out toward the middle, a small white square, and I watched the peaks shiver and close over it.

I still go down at first light. The lake keeps its own accounts, and I have stopped asking it to balance them. When the wind is quiet I can see the ridge standing on its own reflection, two peaks holding the sun between them, and I tell my father the figures are correct.
