Mountain peak tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a mountain outline sits on the side of a finger, with the hand pointing towards a snow-capped mountain range under overcast skies. The linework is thin and unshaded, with a single continuous line forming two or three peaks. The background is a blurred green slope and grey cloud, and the finger has teal painted nails.

Forty winters back the tent was still white, and the big top had a trapeze that went up thirty feet. There was a girl named Ada Pim who walked the wire without a pole, and she had one wish: to see the snow mountains her grandmother spoke of, the ones the old road climbed to before the wars. Every night she drew them on the back of the programme with a stub of blue chalk, one unbroken line that rose, dipped, rose again, and came down at the edge like a sigh. Her father laughed and said a line that never lifted its pencil never got anywhere. She said that was the point.
Then the fever came through the valley in the spring, and the owner sold the elephants before the bills could sell him. By August there were four acts left and a canvas patched with flour sacks. Ada took the last wire over the empty field on a grey morning, the ringmaster below with his hat in both hands, and she didn't look down at him. She looked north, where a range stood up through the cloud, white along the ridges.
She walked the wire to the middle, stopped, and lifted one hand as if to point. Nobody in the field could say later whether she was signalling the crowd or the hills. Then she stepped off the far end of the rope into the sky, and the chalk line still sat on the programme under the ringmaster's thumb, unbroken, going up.
