Fine line symbol on a raised forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised arm and hand are shown against a blurred city skyline with tall buildings and a pale sky. A small black tattoo on the inner forearm shows a loop-topped vertical line with three horizontal bars crossing it. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading, and the image is mostly neutral tones with warm skin and soft background bokeh.

The key had jammed in the lock again, and Ada Penrose was up to her knees in brown water at Lower Wendham, swearing at a padlock older than her grandmother. Behind her the narrowboat Teasel nudged against the gate, its engine ticking as it cooled. Nobody had warned her the Harrow Cut would be shut for the winter, and nobody had warned the mud either.

The key had a loop at the top like a bulb and three bars cut across its shank. Her father had filed them himself the year he bought the boat, one bar for each lock between Wendham and the sea. He used to say a key was only a promise to come back and open something. She had thought that sentimental until the summer she lost the spare and walked the towpath with her fingers counting bars on the rail.
She twisted once more, and the padlock gave with a crack like cold ice. The gate swung wide, but the paddle beyond was already raised, and the water was already falling. Someone had worked the sluice before her. On the far bank, a tin mug sat upturned on a bollard, still dripping, and a folded note under it said only: *Mind the third lock, it sticks too.*
Ada climbed back aboard and tucked the key into her coat pocket, where it knocked against her ribs all the way down to the tideway.
