Mountain range tattoo on the ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a jagged mountain range sits on the side of a bare foot, just below the ankle. The peaks are drawn in fine, thin lines with light shading in the valleys, and the ink appears crisp and dark. The background shows snow-capped mountains and dry brush under a pale sky, with the foot resting on a wooden rail.

The stationmaster at Harrow Lowe kept a brass bell on a hook by the ticket hatch, and it was rung only when a train was due over the high pass. Nobody in the valley had seen a train come down from the peaks in living memory, so the bell mostly gathered dust and the children used it to call the goats.

Then one wet March, a girl named Idris Penhallow walked in off the road with a satchel of pressed gentians and asked for a single ticket to the other side. The clerk laughed. The stationmaster did not. He took the bell down, wiped it with his sleeve, and rang it three times, slowly, the way his grandfather had told him the mountains liked to be spoken to.
From the far slope a whistle answered, thin as a bird. By dusk a black engine had crept round the shoulder of the range, its smoke hanging in the sky like a pencilled line, and it stopped beside the platform as neatly as a dropped stitch. Idris climbed aboard. The clerk swore the carriage had no windows, only rock faces passing slow and grey, their ridges sharp as teeth.
She came back a year later with the same satchel, now empty, and a crooked mark on her ankle where the ticket had been stamped. She said the far side was only more valley, and more people waiting for the bell, and that she had never once been cold up there. The stationmaster nodded and hung the bell back on its hook, and that evening the goats were left to the children again.
