Mountain range on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a person's upper back showing a small black tattoo of three mountain peaks in a row, with a few small marks beneath them that could be birds. The linework is thin and crisp, with some interior shading on the peaks. The composition is soft and close, with dark wavy hair falling across the right side of the frame.

So it sent its youngest slope down into the valley to fetch a wife from the lowland town of Ose, a cheese seller who could not be frightened by anything taller than her father. She agreed to climb up on one condition: that the mountain stop sulking and let the swallows nest in its gullies. The mountain grumbled, but it agreed.
Years passed, and the wife grew tired of being one mountain's whole world. One morning in early autumn she took the goat path up to the ridge, and when she reached the top she struck the stone with the iron pin she had carried since girlhood. The peak split along its spine, and out of the crack rose two more summits, one for each of the daughters who were already halfway up the path behind her, shouting for her to wait.
The birds that had nested in the old mountain did not know where to go, so they circled the new peaks until they settled in the saddles between them. They are there still. If you climb in March you will see them, small and dark and quarrelling, marking the place where a single mountain was taught to share the sky.
