Black ink tattoo of a mountain range above a script quote on a person's upper back, shown in a close photo.

Mountain peaks and script quote on the back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo of a jagged mountain range sits across the upper back, with solid black shading on the peaks and clean outlines. Below it, a handwritten script quote reads 'When my heart is faint, lead me to the rock that is higher than I' in a slanted line. The image is a casual close shot with the skin and a teal top filling most of the frame.

He had a sister in Keswick, Ada, who wrote him one letter a summer and always ended it with the same line copied out in her slanting hand. When my heart is faint, lead me to the rock that is higher than I. He read it aloud to my mother the first night he stayed, and she said it was the saddest thing she had heard a man say about a view. He only shook his head and said the sea was flat and kind to nobody, and a man could drown in a puddle if he lost his nerve.

The summer Ada died, he came up the cliff path at six in the morning with his cap in his hand and asked Nell, my daughter, if she knew the way to the top of Gull Head. She did not, but she went with him anyway, and they came back at noon with sea-thrift in his buttonhole and the wind still in his cheeks. He stood in the hall and breathed as if someone had just lifted a weight off him.

That evening he wiped the window with his sleeve and drew a ridge of peaks in the condensation, jagged as a saw, with a tiny word beneath it. Nell read it before the glass cleared. It said Keswick, though he had never once been there with her.
