Black and grey tattoo of a hatched mountain range above the script words there was nowhere to go but everywhere, on a person's upper back near the shoulder blade.

Mountain range and script quote on upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A hatched mountain range runs across the upper back, drawn in fine dark linework with shaded valleys and peaks. Below it, a handwritten script quote reads there was nowhere to go but everywhere, set across two lines. The ink is black with no colour, and the skin around the tattoo shows slight redness from fresh healing.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The keep had lost its roof the winter before my mother was born, and rain came through the arrow slits in ropes, so by the time Master Ansel rode up the valley road I had already pulled the last tapestries down to wrap the ink pots. He did not ask why. He only looked at the range behind the walls, its grey teeth against the sky, and said he could no longer hold the pass for the count.

He left me his survey book and a bottle of blue-black ink that would not freeze. Each evening I sat in the broken hall with my back against the chimney stone and drew what I could see: the ridge that bent like a wrist, the gullies packed with old snow, the peak the shepherds called the Widow because it wore a cloud like a veil. I hatched the shadows with a goose quill, short strokes that never quite met, since the light shifted too fast to hold still for a finer line.

In the ninth week the soldiers came up the goat track with torches, and I understood they meant to starve the place out. I climbed the wall to count their fires. Below, the road glittered with them. Behind me the mountains went on without end, and I remembered the line Ansel had scratched beneath his last sketch in a hurried hand: there was nowhere to go but everywhere. I had taken it for a sour joke.

The soldiers found the keep empty by noon, and the ledge above it furred with fresh frost. Nobody had the stomach to follow a woman who walked north along the ridge, drawing as she went.
