Mountain range and pine trees on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded tattoo of a mountain range runs across the outer side of a foot towards the ankle, with peaks of varying height and soft grey wash behind them. Three tall pine trees stand at the right-hand end, drawn with darker, more defined linework. The image is a close, well-lit photograph against a pale background, with a red painted toenail visible at the top.

We had been three days out from the bothy at Glen Corran. Rain came sideways off the ridge and the pines along the lower slope bent like old men arguing. Halfway down the eastern face, where the scree gave way to heather, I found the surveyor's mark Dunmore's grandfather had cut in 1931, a little arrow with a notch, and I knew then we were not lost at all. We had only been walking in circles inside a story someone else had written.

Dunmore did not believe me until the mist tore open at dusk and there they were, the whole range laid out in grey washes like breath on a window, each peak a shade paler than the last. Three pines stood at the edge of the drop, black and certain, the only things up there that had not moved in a century.

We pitched the tent beside them. In the morning Dunmore folded the map into his coat and did not unfold it again. He said the mountains were simply where they were, and that was the only true thing on any paper.
