Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop shows a person's upper arm and chest in a white sleeveless top, with a small tattoo of a mountain range on the outer upper arm. The mountain peaks are drawn in thin black linework with some simple shading. The background shows trees, patches of snow and a dirt path.

Margit had drawn the same ridge forty times before the surveyor's office let her keep the pen. Her hand was steady enough. What the men in the back room disliked was her habit of drawing the peaks as though they were about to move, the lines thin as pencil lead and never quite closed at the bases, so that the mountains seemed to stand on their own shadows.

Her brother Tomas had gone up to the high col in March with a theodolite and a mule that hated him. The letter that came back was four lines long. Snow to the knees on the north face. Took the bearings twice. The third peak is not where the map says, and I think the map is wrong, not me.
She pinned the letter above her table and spent a week copying his sightlines onto good vellum. Each ridge went down in ink so fine that a careless breath would smudge it. When the foreman came past and asked why the shading was so light, she said the true range was never as dark as the paper wanted it to be.
On the Friday the vellum went out in a leather tube. Margit kept the spare sheet, the one she had traced without his bearings, and folded it into her coat. She told nobody she had drawn a fourth peak on it, higher than the other three, and left it blank for him to name.
