Ohana script on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a person's arm below a loose white sleeve, showing the word ohana written in thin, black, cursive script. The linework is fine and even, with the letters sitting in a single horizontal line on the outer side of the upper arm. The image is in full colour with soft natural light, a white fabric backdrop and a muted pink wall behind the subject.

The tide had already slid over the reef when Uncle Kawika said we were going back for the boy, and nobody argued, because by then the boy belonged to us whether his mother had signed anything or not. He had come off the Tuesday ferry with a cardboard suitcase and a seabird's feather tucked in his sock, and by Friday he was sleeping on our veranda with my cousin's dog across his feet.

Aunty Leilani counted us on the slipway the way she counted eggs, out loud and then again. Five of us, two oars each, and the rope Kawika tied round his waist. The swell lifted the outrigger and dropped it like a hand letting go, and I kept my eyes on the black rock where the boy had stayed behind to look for the crab he swore was his.
He was waiting at the far edge of the rock with the water up to his knees, holding a tin lunchbox against his chest. When we pulled him in he opened it. Inside was a folded sheet of paper with our names written down the side in pencil, each one spelled carefully, and at the bottom, underlined twice, the word ohana.
"You left me off," he said, and pointed at the empty line beneath the last name.
We had not left him off on purpose. We had simply never thought to write him down. That night Aunty pinned the sheet to the kitchen wall beside the calendar, and the next morning there was a new line under our names in her round hand, and the boy's name was the last one on it.
