Small heart and line tattoos on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in a navy crochet top and denim shorts sits on a grey sofa with one arm raised, showing two small tattoos on the inner upper arm. The first is a tiny outlined heart, and the second is a thin, looping single line that runs down towards the elbow. Both are in black ink with delicate, even linework against soft, neutral indoor lighting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, the gull has finally given up on the bin behind the chandlery, though not before Mr Pascoe threw a mackerel at it, missed, and hit the Harbourmaster square on his new hat. Half the quay saw it. I expect you'll want that for your collection of town stories. The one o'clock ferry was late again, so I sold tickets all afternoon to a man with a cello and two children who wanted to know whether the sea went salty all the way down.

I keep thinking about the ticket you drew on the night before you left. You had no paper but the back of a crossing stub, so you used my biro and made a line that looped and doubled over itself like the tide coming in with no hurry at all. I said tides don't loop, and you said this one does. At the top you squeezed in a heart so small the ink nearly swallowed it. The stub went through the wash in my coat pocket, and Mam still says she could have saved me the bother of worrying if I'd only kept it dry.

It survived, mostly. The heart has bled into a grey smudge, but the line is clear enough. I've pressed it between the pages of the tide tables, where it sits beside the Thursday I wrote you a letter I never posted. Last night I walked down to the slip after the last boat and watched the wake spread out behind the harbour wall, looping and turning on itself exactly as you said it would. I'm sending the stub with this, so you'll know which tide I mean. Write back soon, and tell me the sea there is as salty as they promised.
