There are two triangles now, scratched beside the check numbers by the cage. One is filled in solid and the other is only edged. Mrs Gorton from Number Four says it's the old tally the deputies used before the brass tokens came in, a black mark for a man sent up and a bare mark for a man still under. I told her she had it backwards, because nobody in this village has ever wanted a bare mark on anything that matters.

I went up to the lamp room this morning with a stub of carpenter's pencil in my coat. I didn't mean to, but I stood under the board for a long while, working out what a bare mark looks like when it's waiting. Then I drew the solid one beside his name, pressing hard enough to score the wood, because a thing like that ought to be seen from the cage.
