Infinity symbol with three coloured hearts on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A thin black outline forms an infinity symbol with a small script letter on its right loop. Three filled hearts sit along the centre of the loop, coloured blue, peach and green. The tattoo is photographed straight on against a dark chair and a yellow cabinet in the background.

Sit down, sit down, the cake will keep. Old Maud Penhallow used to say a promise is a loop of string with no end to it, and that is why the knot-maker drew her figure eight lying on its side. My grandmother knew her. Maud stood at the church gate with a reel of ribbon in one hand and shears in the other, and she would not cut a length for anybody who asked for a short one.

Three brides came to her the spring the mill burned. The first, Bea Carrow, wanted blue for the sea she had crossed to marry. The second, Lottie Hale, wanted peach, for the kitchen where she had learned to bake bread with her bare hands. The third wanted green, because her husband had been a gardener, and the ribbon had to be green or the bees wouldn't come. Maud tied each ribbon into a heart at the crossing point, so the three lay along one loop, and told each girl the same thing: keep hold of your end and the other end will find you.
Years on, the three of them quarrelled over a gate, then over a funeral, then over nothing at all, and for one whole winter they did not speak. Then the mill was rebuilt and the bell rang for the first wedding inside it. There was Lottie's boy carrying a tray of cups, and Bea's granddaughter with a green ribbon round her wrist, and nobody could say afterwards who had started the laughing.
Maud's string is still in the vestry drawer, if you care to look. The knot in the middle has gone soft and loose, because it was never meant to hold anything tight. Now, who has the good glasses? Pass them down the table, and mind the cake.
