The drought had taken the last of the mud from the Hollow Pan, and by the third week the young bull Sefu had stopped pretending he could find water by smell. He came down the dry bed from the north with his mother's old path in his legs, and the dust on his back was the colour of the road. At the far rim, where the acacias gave out, another elephant was already standing over the last grey pool, a female with one notched ear, from the southern herds that everyone said were not to be trusted.

Neither of them moved. The herds of both sides had long ago agreed that the pool belonged to whoever reached it first, and neither had reached it first, so the water sat between them like a stone on a scale. Sefu could hear the heat ticking in the thorn branches. He thought of his grandmother's stories about the two rivers that once ran together and then forgot how. Nyala, the notched one, lowered her head and sniffed the air over the mud, and he understood she was thirsty in the same way he was.
In the end they stepped in from opposite sides at the same moment, and their trunks met over the water. It was not a gift, nor a truce exactly, only a way of reaching the pool without either of them crossing the line. They drank in turns, sip and pause, sip and pause, while the herds on each rim muttered and then fell quiet. When the rains came at last, the pool swelled and spilled over the sand, and on the bank a red seed pod had split open between the two of them, its halves curved together like a heart that had decided to stay.
