Mug and envelope tattoos on a calf

Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo

The image is a side-by-side pair of photographs showing two tattoos on the same calf. The left tattoo shows a steaming mug with a heart on its side, a pink flower, green leaves and a red-outlined banner reading MOM, while the right shows a sealed envelope with a heart, a pink flower, green leaves and a banner reading DAD. The bold black outlines and grey shading give the mug and envelope volume, with flat pink, red and green fills for the flowers, leaves and details.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The chains bit at the snow on Scarth Pass and I kept my eyes on the verge posts, one every hundred yards, their black tops poking up like pens. On the dash my tin mug of tea had gone lukewarm, and the steam had given up around the time the wipers started squealing.

Thursdays were the hard run. Up at the top farm, where the Dury family had kept sheep for three generations, there was one letter every week and it was always the same: a cream envelope, a heart pressed into the flap in red biro, the address written in careful capitals to Mr T. Dury, Shepherd's Hut, Scarth Top. The postmark was always Carlisle. I had never seen the sender's name, and the old man never asked me to look.

That Thursday he was waiting at the gate with his coat over his nightshirt. He took the envelope without opening it, turned it over twice the way you'd test a loaf, and tucked it inside his coat. 'She sends the hearts,' he said. 'Never the words. Saves me the bother of reading them out.' He nodded at my mug. 'Bring that up here, lad. I'll put a drop of something in it.'

We drank on his step with the cloud rolling over the pass, and he said nothing more about it. When I got back to the van I wiped the condensation off the windscreen and started the long drop into the valley. The mug was still warm in my palm all the way down, and I found I was thinking less about the letter than about the hand that had pressed that little red heart into the flap.
