Traditional heart with MOM banner and flowers

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A red heart with a silver-grey outline sits at the centre, with a banner reading MOM across it. Teal and dark green leaves, pink-red flowers and a flame-like shape surround the heart, all with bold black outlines. The bright colours are set against a plain, softly lit skin background with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

The order was for forty red carnations, with dark green leaves tucked round them and a sprig of teal-dyed eucalyptus for the colour. The boy came back at half past twelve, dripping, with a fistful of coins that smelled of the river. He had no money for the carnations, he said, only for one, and he wanted it from the bucket nearest the gate. I asked him who it was for. He looked at the rain for a while before he answered.

"The same person," he said, and held out his hand for the stem.
