The swallows came back to the shed on Tuesday, two of them, or the same two that always do, and I sat on the step with my tea going cold and watched them stitch the air above the lawn. You'd have said they were late. You always said they were late, and then they weren't.

I made it up to the top bed on Saturday. Your runner beans are already climbing the trellis, though nobody sowed them this year, which I've decided to take as your doing. The purple clematis on the back fence has gone wild. Mr Abbott from next door says it wants cutting back hard, and I told him I'd sooner lose the fence.

I found the old biscuit tin in the potting shed, behind the seed packets, the one with the faded red heart on the lid. Inside were your reading glasses and a note in your square handwriting: Gone to the allotment, back by four, and don't let the cat in the greenhouse. I laughed until I had to sit down on an upturned bucket, and then I didn't laugh at all for a bit.

The beans will be ready by the end of July. Come and pick them with me. The swallows are already eyeing the eaves again, and I've left the back gate on the latch so you can come in the way you always did, straight through the garden without knocking.
