Muscle car with banknotes on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A rear three-quarter view of a classic fastback muscle car with a raised rear spoiler, shown in fine, detailed shading. Banknotes fly out from behind the car and scatter across the skin, with a few notes drifting into the background. The car is rendered in black and grey with soft gradients, and a small red tail light is the only colour in the design.

The fastback had been under a dust sheet in Yvonne Pritchard's lock-up for nineteen years, and Dev only agreed to look at it because she offered him the tyres for nothing. The black paint had gone chalky across the bonnet. Someone had bolted a rear spoiler on crooked, the way men did when they wanted a car to look faster than it was, and when he ran a thumb along the wheel arch the grime came away in a grey stripe.

"Her husband won it at cards in 1989," Yvonne said from the doorway, rolling a cigarette she wasn't allowed to light in there. "Off a man in Doncaster who swore it had once outrun the police on the A1. Ray believed every word. He never drove it past the end of the road."
Under the rear seat, wrapped in a carrier bag gone brittle, Dev found a biscuit tin. Inside were old pound notes, soft as cloth, and a bundle of twenties still crisp enough to crackle. Yvonne looked at them without much interest. "He said it was for the boys' university," she said. "He never said which boys, or which university."
It took Dev three weekends to get the engine turning. He rebuilt the tail light with a red lens he found in a bin at a breaker's yard, and he kept the tin on the passenger seat because Yvonne wouldn't have it in the house. On the Sunday he drove the car out onto the bypass. At the first lay-by he put his foot down, the boot lid rattled, and the notes came out of the gap in the back like a flock startled from a hedge. A small boy in a hi-vis jacket ran after the nearest one, laughing, and Dev watched it spin away over the wire fence until it was just a speck above the fields.
