Muscle car with banknotes on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A rear three-quarter view of a fastback muscle car with a raised rear spoiler, drawn in fine shaded detail with glossy highlights on the bodywork and wheel. Banknotes flutter out from the boot and scatter across the skin toward the wrist, with a faint sketched road and motion lines behind the car. The piece is rendered entirely in black and grey ink on a softly lit forearm against a dark background.

The customs man at Kessel Bridge had searched every kind of car that came over the river, but nothing had ever sat at his barrier the way the green fastback did that Thursday in October. Its tail was low, its wing raised like a hand held up to say wait, and Mattias Dorn found himself counting the seconds until the engine stopped ticking.

The driver was Ilse Hradek, who sold lace at the Brenn market and had crossed the bridge every week for eleven years. She wound down the window, smiled at him as if they were old friends, and said the boot held nothing but a spare wheel and her mother's sewing box. He believed her about the wheel. He did not believe her about the box. "Open it, please," he said, and she sighed, pressed the button, and stepped out to watch with him.
The lid lifted and the wind off the water came straight in. Notes rose from the boot in a slow flock, turning over as they climbed, and soon the road behind the car was full of them. A boy from the bakery ran out from the verge shouting, then stopped, then began to laugh and gather what he could. Mattias reached for a note that drifted against his sleeve and found it was only paper, cheap and creased, with a face on it he had never troubled to learn.
"They were my husband's," Ilse said. "He wanted them gone before the bank came for the house." Mattias looked at the car, then at the bridge, then at the grey water running under it. "Then I suppose they will have to go somewhere else," he said, and waved her through. Behind her the last of the notes settled on the far bank like leaves, and by morning there was not a single one left in Brenn.
