Music controls and infinity symbol on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a small tattoo on the upper back showing previous track, pause, fast forward and next track icons, followed by an infinity symbol. The icons are drawn in bold, solid black linework with simple, even shapes. A hand with dark nail polish points at the design, which sits centrally against the soft grey skin and plain light background.

Dear Marnie,

The Sandwell boat came in late again, so I've been sitting in the back of the repair shop on Quay Street with the radio off and your mixtape in the deck. You'll laugh, but the tape player still eats the ends of songs. I ran the rewind for an hour this morning until the spool squealed, then stopped, then played the last eleven seconds of side B over and over, because that's the bit where Dad hums before he stops.
Mrs Okonedo brought in her husband's old Sony on Tuesday. He's been gone since March, and she wanted the buttons to work so she could hear him count in on the Sunday hymns. The pause key had gone soft, so I sprayed the contacts and told her it would need a day to dry. She said she'd wait. She sat on the stool by the window with her handbag on her knees while the gulls argued over the bins.
I keep thinking about the symbols on the front panel. Back, pause, forward, and then the little loop sign at the end that means go again. Somebody designed that so you never had to reach the end. It's why I can't close the shop until I've run the tape through once more. Come home in October. I'll have the deck fixed by then, and I'll let you press the last button yourself.
Love, Jen
