Music player controls and infinity on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of media playback icons sits on the upper back near the shoulder blade: a skip back symbol, a pause symbol, a skip forward symbol and an infinity sign in a row. The icons use solid, bold shapes with clean edges, and the tattoo is set against smooth, evenly lit skin. A hand with dark nail polish points at the tattoo from the lower left of the frame.

Nobody under sixty remembered the tent going up, but Dad's old sound desk still sat in the back of the lorry under a tarp, and I was the only one who knew how to make it talk. The Marvello Brothers had been slipping since the spring, first the trapeze net, then the elephant, then the rope for the high wire, and by August we were down to four acts and a dog that could count to three if you bribed it with liver.

The show ran on a single cassette. Side A was the overture Mum had chosen in 1978, all brass and wobble, and it ended in a loop that never quite came back to the top. Every night at eight I stood in the wings with my thumb on the buttons: rewind for the slow bit, play for the entrance, pause for the strongman's long breath before he lifted the piano. Fast forward got me out of the interval when the crowd was thin. The tape had been stretched so many times the loop sounded like a hymn sung underwater.
On the last night, a Tuesday, there were eleven people in the stands, one of them a boy whose balloon kept drifting up toward the canvas. I pressed pause in the middle of the overture, just to see. The brass froze. The strongman froze with his arms half raised. Nobody clapped and nobody left. For one long, silly moment the whole ruined tent held still, and I understood Dad had been doing the same thing for thirty years. Then I pressed play, and the loop began again from the top, because that was the only trick the tape had left.
