Crescent moon and fine line motif on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small fine line tattoo sits on the inner upper arm of a raised arm. It shows a crescent moon at the base, with a thin vertical element above it that includes looped and interlocking strokes and a dotted line at the top. The ink is black, with a soft, vintage-style filter across the photo, and the torso in a white top is blurred in the background.

Now sit closer, you lot, because the lamps are going out one by one and I'll not shout over the generator. This is about the rope they strung from the big wheel's hub up to the crescent moon the Haddow brothers painted on the tent flap in 1911. Nobody ever climbed it. Every knot was tied twice so a body could hold on, and at the top the rope ends in a line of dots, one for each tent peg, and then there's only air.

Jessamy Crane was the stilt walker's girl, and she could tie a knot in the dark faster than her father could count his coins. The night the wheel stopped, she stood at the foot of that rope with a lantern in her teeth and a pocketful of wax. She knew the moon was no painting. She had watched it sink behind the canal every dawn, and she reckoned a thing that sinks can be reached if you're patient about the knots.
She climbed. Each loop was a breath, each twist a bit of the year she'd lost, and the dots at the top were not stars, whatever the boys said. They were footholds she meant to reach. Halfway up the fairground music cut out and the whole field turned to look, and a child started crying that she was gone. But the rope kept moving, slow and sure, until the lantern was only a spark against the moon's curve.
Next morning the rope was back on the hub, neat as a fishing line, and tied to the last dot was a brass crescent no bigger than a thumbnail. Jessamy's lantern hung from it, still lit. So that's the tale. The lamps are out now, so off you go, and mind the dark bit by the cider tent.
