Four chevrons on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a forearm and wrist with four small chevron marks lined up in a row. The strokes are thin, crisp and evenly weighted, with the chevrons pointing in the same direction. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against plain skin, with a blurred background and part of a hand visible at the left.

The boats kept striking the Teeth that winter, so Ness took her father's cold chisel down to the landing rock the morning after the lamp went out in the fog. Her father said the sea did not read marks. She said the gulls did not either, and yet they never flew into the cliff.

She cut four chevrons into the grey stone at the height of a man's wrist, each pointing the way the flood ran, the way a boat should bear. The first took her all morning. The stroke had to be even or the tide would take it for a crack. By the fourth she had learned to lean her whole weight into the chisel and let the iron do the thinking.
When the herring fleet came home in March, the skipper of the Mary Ann held his tiller steady past the rock and did not look at the lamp at all. He looked at the four little arrows, and steered where they sent him, into the quiet water behind the Teeth.
People say the marks are still there, worn soft by weather, and that a boat coming in blind will find them if it is listening. Ness kept the lamp for forty years after. Her father never once admitted he had been wrong about the gulls.
