Three bats flying across the side of a neck
Neck · Black and grey · Photo
Three bats in flight are tattooed on the side of a woman's neck, behind her ear, with the largest bat near the centre and two smaller ones trailing towards the ear and shoulder. The linework is crisp and the wings and bodies are shaded in grey to give them depth. The image is a close side view with the hair pulled up, and only the neck, ear and some piercings are visible.

Dear Mags, you asked in your last card whether the bats ever came back to St Ebba's after the roof men sealed the louvres, so here is the news, though you'll think me soft for telling it. Three of them came back on the Thursday, the evening before Dad's funeral, and they slipped out from under the lead flashing just as the ringers were stepping off the tower stairs.

Mr Pargeter swore they were swifts, and Ruth from the flower rota swore they were ghosts, but I stood in the lych gate and counted them. The biggest flew low over the yews, wings wide and dark as burnt paper, and the two smaller ones kept catching up to it and peeling away again, like children who won't go to bed. They went round the churchyard wall three times before turning east towards the marsh, and I lost them against the sky.
I've thought since about how Dad would have hated the fuss, and how he'd have counted them too, out of habit, with his pencil behind his ear. He always said a bell only rings true if somebody is listening from outside. So I rang the treble myself on Saturday, badly, with the rope burning my palms, and I didn't look up once.
Come up at Easter and I'll show you the flashing where they got in. There's a gap the width of a folded hymn sheet, and I've left it open on purpose. Love, Jen.
