Small cat silhouette behind the ear

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black silhouette of a cat in a walking pose sits on the skin behind the ear, with dark hair falling across the left side of the frame. The linework is simple and filled, with little internal shading, and the tattoo is in black ink only. The close crop keeps the tattoo as the focal point against the smooth skin and ear.

The cat had already crossed the river bridge twice before anyone in Lirrean thought to ask whose it was. I noticed because I was the one who carried the king's mail over the water every morning, and the cat walked beside me on the planks as if it had been hired for the job. It was black all over, the colour of wet slate, and it kept its tail up like a question mark that had already decided on the answer.

The palace folk called it the Ninth Bell, because it appeared at the ninth stroke each evening at the south gate and was gone before the tenth. Nobody fed it. The gatekeeper swore it had once walked straight through the iron bars without slowing. I did not believe him until the winter the grain barges were lost on the Sayle, when the cat came to my door, sat on the step facing north, and would not move until I put on my boots.

We walked the north road in snow. Twice it stopped and looked back at me, a shape cut out of the white, patient as a clerk. On the third morning we found the first barge on the mudflats below Cairn Hollow, its hull split and its crew long gone. The cat walked up the bank to a single dry cask wedged in the reeds and sat down beside it. Inside, wrapped in oilcloth, were the king's seals, untouched by the water.

I returned them to the palace and told the chamberlain what I had seen. He wrote it down as weather. The cat never came to my door again, though I still see it at the ninth stroke, crossing the south gate with its tail high, going somewhere it has no need to explain.
