Fine line black tattoo of musical notes and curling swirls rising from a hand, with the words And beauty is not a need but an ecstasy arcing around it.

Musical notes rising from a hand

Fine line · Black and grey · Photo

A hand with its fingers pointing down forms the base of a tree-like shape made of musical notes and curling swirls. A bass clef and a sharp sign sit near the wrist, and a line of text runs in an arc around the design. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is rendered entirely in black ink on skin.

The bellows had split again, and Marion Hask was still on her knees beside the organ loft with a torch in her teeth when the verger asked whether it could be saved by Sunday. She took the torch out and said the bellows could be stitched, but the pipes had been silent so long they had forgotten their own notes, and that was harder to mend.

Her father had taught her to tune by ear, rising in fifths like a man climbing a ladder he did not trust. He had kept a ledger of every church and village hall he visited, and in the back of it, in pencil, was a small sketch of an open hand with notes lifting off the fingertips like sparks. He never explained it. When she asked, he said a hand was the only instrument that tuned itself to the thing it held.

She worked through the week with a tuning fork in her breast pocket and the chapel's cold seeping through her jumper. On Friday she found a pipe the old sexton had bent flat years back, to stop a boy whistling through it. She eased it up with the flat of a knife, one tiny turn at a time, until the note stood straight and true in the empty nave.

On Sunday the congregation shuffled in with their coats still on, and the verger pumped the bellows while she played one slow chord. Nobody spoke. Then an old woman in the third pew began to hum, and the note in the pipe moved to meet her, and the whole building seemed to lean toward it like a hedge toward light. Marion closed the ledger on her knee and did not look up until the last note had gone quietly into the rafters.
