Nail polish bottle on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A tipped nail polish bottle with a brush rests on a newspaper-print background, with pink polish pouring from the bottle into a puddle. The shading is smooth and realistic, with glossy highlights on the glass and soft gradients in the pink and grey tones. Vivid purple, orange and green watercolour splashes sit behind the subject, and the arm fills most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nan's rule was never to paint nails over a newspaper unless the news was already dead, so on the Thursday before the regatta Maureen spread the Wexbridge Courier across the oilcloth and read the council notices aloud while she worked. Mrs Probert had been fined for a hedge. The bus to Ketterley was off again. Maureen liked the hedge story best.

Then the bottle went over. It was the good pink, the one she'd bought for a wedding that never happened, and it rolled off the table edge with its brush still in the neck, and a slow tongue of colour ran out across the column about the new car park. Maureen said a word Nan would have slapped her for. She didn't reach for the cloth. She sat and watched the polish spread until the word CIVIC was drowned and the pink pooled into a small glossy lake, the sort you'd want to dip a finger into.

By the time she stood up, the paper was a map of things nobody needed to know. Ketterley had lost its bus. Mrs Probert's hedge was a smudge. The car park was pink. Maureen folded the Courier in on itself, left it on the step for the bins, and went back inside to do her left hand, which she had decided on the spot would be a colour nobody in Wexbridge had ever worn.
