Namaste script on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single word, namaste, is written in a flowing cursive script across the forearm. The linework is thin and even, in black or dark grey ink, with no shading. The background is softly out of focus in greens and yellows, which keeps attention on the lettering.

Sit down, sit down, the kettle isn't boiled yet and I'm not finished with you. You want to know where the word on the ferryman's arm came from? Then hush, and I'll tell it the way my mother told it to me on the rocks below the lighthouse, with the tide coming in under us.

Three winters back, the Tuesday boat brought a letter for Tomas Ferrel, and the postmistress swore the handwriting was drawn, not written, every loop running into the next like a thread through a needle. Inside was one word on a torn scrap of seed packet. Nobody on Inish Bray could read it. The schoolmaster squinted at it, then said it meant something like I bow to the light in you, and the whole island went quiet, because the Dorans and the Carricks had not spoken since the pier money went missing.
My grandmother Eilidh Carrick had sworn she would never nod at a Doran as long as she drew breath. That evening she sat at her window with the lamp unlit, turned the scrap over in her fingers, and pressed her palms together the way the schoolmaster had shown her. She bowed to the dark glass, and then, feeling foolish, she bowed again.
The next spring, young Callum Doran came up the path with the mill keys in his fist, and he stopped, and she stood in her doorway. Neither of them said a word. He bowed first. She bowed back. The pier was mended by June.
And that's why, when you see a man with that word running along his arm in thin dark ink, you bow to him first. Mind the step on your way out. It's slippery with the spray.
