The herring boats came home short that autumn, and the Mary Ann did not come home at all. On the third morning three gulls came up the harbour wall and sat in a row on the bollard where Ruth Coad's father used to coil his line. The old men said it meant nothing, only gulls. Ruth did not argue. She took a stick of chalk from the net loft and went down the slipway.

Her grandmother had told her that the sea listened to words written on stone, provided the words were plain and the writer was not afraid of them. So Ruth wrote one word, slow and looped like a mooring rope, and underlined it twice. Leave. It was not a plea to bring anyone home. It was an asking to let go, so that the water would loosen its grip on what it had already taken and stop reaching for the rest of the fleet.

The tide came up over the chalk at noon and took the letters one by one, starting with the last. By dusk the slipway was bare. Ruth went home and slept for the first time in a week. In the morning the three gulls had gone, and so had the swell that had been pushing at the breakwater all night.

The Mary Ann came round the point on the slack water, low in the rail, with all four men aboard and their oilskins stiff with salt. Nobody asked Ruth what she had written. The old men only nodded at the slipway, where the sea had left a fine pale line in the wet sand, curling out past the wall and back again, and at the far end of it three small birds going up into the light.
