Imagine script on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a hand raised with the inner wrist in focus, carrying the word imagine in thin, flowing script. The linework is delicate and even, rendered in a single dark ink with no shading. The background is heavily blurred in warm pinks and cream tones, which keeps attention on the lettering.

The big top at Harrowgate has three rows of benches left and a tent that smells of wet canvas and diesel. You are the only one still sewing sequins back onto the ringmaster's coat, because Mr Vellacott can no longer pay anyone to do it. Outside, the last elephant is being walked to the lorry by a village girl who doesn't know what she's doing.

Your mother's trapeze rope hangs above the sawdust, frayed to the thickness of a thumb. Each evening you climb it to check the knots, and each evening you tell yourself the crowds will return once the posters go up in Leeds. On the back wall of the caravan, someone once painted a single word in the same loose hand that taught you to write your name: imagine. Nobody remembers who did it, or why.
On the last Saturday the rain holds off. Forty people come, mostly children with their parents' coats over their pyjamas. You have nothing to sell them but the old routine: the man who swallows fire, the clown who forgets his lines. Then the generator coughs and the lights go out, and in the dark a torch finds the rope, and a small voice asks what happens next.
You tell her to close her eyes. You tell her to imagine the tent full, the brass band loud, the net that nobody ever needed. She does. For a minute, so do you. Then the lights come back on, the ring is only sawdust again, and the rope is still swinging, and you understand that the show was never the thing that needed holding up.
