Nautilus shell on upper chest
Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A nautilus shell is shown in profile, with its spiral chambers drawn in dense hatched and cross-hatched lines. The shell's outer edge is softened with stippled shading, giving it a vintage engraving look. The tattoo is in black and grey, and sits on the upper chest against a plain white top, with the subject's face out of frame.

The band at the Rosalind Ballroom is playing its last waltz to a half-empty floor, and you are leaning on the cloakroom counter because your feet have given up. Out past the glass doors, the tide is turning over the pier pilings, and the couples still dancing have begun to drift in a slow circle, the way water goes down a plughole. Ruth Pennock, who has run the cloakroom since the war, slides a hatbox toward you and says it belonged to a man who never came back for it.

Inside, wrapped in a wool scarf that smells of pipe smoke, is a nautilus shell. Someone has sawn it in half so you can see the chambers, each one a little smaller than the last, all wound around a single centre like the dance floor's own pattern. Ruth says her husband brought it back from a trawler off Madeira in 1951, and that he used to count the rooms with his thumb when he could not sleep. She taps the outer whorl with a fingernail. The engraving on it is so fine you could mistake it for a drawing made by hand over several winters.
Stan, the trumpeter, catches your eye across the hall and lifts his instrument as if to ask. You nod, and he plays the old tune that always gets the stragglers up. You cross the boards, and the floorboards creak in time with the spiral, one room after another, until you are turning in the centre of it.
When the lights finally go up, you leave the shell on the counter for Ruth, who has already gone home. Tucked into the outermost chamber is a ticket stub for the first dance you ever had here.
