Dotwork spiral on the shoulder
Dotwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph from behind of a person's upper back and shoulder. A spiral made of small black dots sits on the shoulder blade, with the dots growing larger toward the outer edge and smaller toward the centre. The skin is pale and the background is a plain light grey, with a black top worn off the shoulder.

Sit closer, the lamp's low and my voice carries further when the wind's in the vents. You want the tale of Marit Ose and the wall of dots? Fine. Out past Harrow Ring, where the station hums like a struck bell, there was a seed-keeper who drew every seedling's count in ink on the curved wall of the hydroponic drum.

Her method was strange even then. The newest counts went on the outside, big as thumbnails, because a young plant is loud and easy to see. The older counts shrank inward, each one smaller, until the centre was a single pinprick, the first seed, which nobody living remembered planting. Visitors laughed at her. Why start from the middle? Marit said the middle is where the spiral begins, and the outside is only where you happen to be standing when you look.
The trouble came in the forty-first year, when the water recyclers failed and the drum went dark for nine days. Her apprentice, a boy named Dov with ink stained into his wrists, wanted to scrub the wall clean and start over. She refused. She walked him to the centre with a torch and made him press his thumb to that tiny first dot. Then she told him to make the next one, and the one after, and to keep going outward into the dark.
He did. On the ninth morning the lights came back on the wall before they came back anywhere else, and Dov's dot sat at the edge, bigger than the rest. It's still there, if you go up to the drum and look. Mind your step on the ladder.
