Infinity and arrow on the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small infinity symbol drawn with a thin black outline runs horizontally across the back of the neck, with an arrow passing through its centre and a feathered tip at the upper end. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against the skin. The tattoo sits centrally below the hairline, with the person's short hair and a dark leather collar framing it on a plain light background.

Captain Hallam has taken to dipping his biscuits in tea and blames the Admiralty for sending us flour that smells of the warehouse. I have told him the flour is fine and it is his stomach that has gone soft.

Something happened on Tuesday I want to tell you properly. The lookout boy, Tobias, came down white as a plate and said there was a gull with an arrow through its breast circling the mainmast. We hung a scrap of pork fat from the rigging to lure it, and sure enough a bird came in low, and I saw the arrow was not through it at all. It was a sliver of driftwood, shaped like a fletched shaft, caught in a loop of old fishing line that had wound round the gull's leg and then round itself, over and over, in a figure of eight.
I cut it free with the bread knife, which is the only blade I trust. The bird flew off without thanking anyone. I kept the line. It is in my apron pocket now, the loop lying flat against my hip, and I have been thinking that a thing can go round forever and still come back to the same place, which is more than I can say for the ship's cat.
Write soon, and tell Mother the dripping she sent was rancid by the time it reached us, so she need not send any more. Your loving brother, Samuel.
