Realism colour tattoo on a forearm showing a shaded grey skull with two bees above and a pink rose below.

Skull, bees and rose on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A photograph of a forearm tattoo showing a large skull with grey and tan shading, with two black and yellow bees near the top edge. A pink rose with soft highlights sits along the lower part of the forearm. The soft gradients and lifelike shading give the piece a realistic, three-dimensional look against the dark sleeve.

Brother Anselm will tell you the bees will not sting a man who has confessed, and you will believe him because you are nineteen and the hive smoke has made your eyes water. The abbey garden runs down to the river in terraces, and the skeps stand in a row under the wall like a line of grey bishops. Your task is the autumn robbing. You must lift the combs before the frost, leave enough honey for winter, and never, ever hurry.

On the third morning the old abbot's skull is brought out of the crypt for re-boxing, because the lead lining has split and the bone has begun to crumble. You are told to carry the box to the rose bed beneath the south window, where the abbot planted the Gallica roses the year he came. Brother Anselm says the dead like to be near what they loved. You set the box down among the petals already browning at their edges, and you wonder whether the bees will come for the sugar on the cloth wrapping.

They do come. Two of them settle on the lid, dark and heavy, and you watch them walk the grain of the old brow as if reading it. You stay very still. Brother Anselm does not even look up from his knot of twine. "He kept them honest," he says, "and they keep him company."

By Advent the rose has put out one last bloom, pink as a cut palm, and you carry it in for the altar. The skull stays where it is. When you come back to the garden in spring, the hives have swarmed onto the wall beside it, quiet as prayer.
