Red seahorse with an eye on a limb
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A red seahorse with a large open eye on its head and a curled tail fills most of the frame, with spiky red fins along its back. Bold dark outlines and smooth, shaded red and grey tones give it a dimensional, cartoon-like finish. Green and teal wash behind it, with small bubbles and dark wavy lines, creates an underwater setting, and the top edge shows part of another outlined design.

Hush now, and mind the fire, because this is the part where the sea starts listening. The kingdom of Carrowmere lay under the green water beyond the salt marshes, and its king went blind the winter the herring failed. Nobody at court could tell him what the tides were doing, so he sent his steward down to Lantern Reef to fetch the seahorse, the only creature in all that water who could hold its head still enough to watch the whole coast at once.

The seahorse had one eye, wide and grey-ringed, set in the bone of its crown, and it had not blinked in three hundred years. It agreed to watch for the king on one condition: that no one ever asked it to look away from the reef. The steward, a man called Osric Vell who thought himself clever, swore on his mother's grave that he would keep the bargain, then went home and sold the king a map of tides he had never measured.
The sea remembered the bargain better than the steward did. One grey morning the water in the harbour began to pull backwards, the way it does before it comes in hard, and the seahorse's spiny fins flared red across the reef like a warning lamp. Osric was out past the breakwater in a borrowed boat, counting the fish he had not caught. The eye turned, slow as a tide, and Osric saw his own face reflected in it, small and frightened and very far from home.
The king never regained his sight, but he learned to hear the water's changes and to trust the people who spoke plainly about them. Osric was given a rowing boat and a long walk along the marsh. Some nights, if you lean over the harbour wall and keep very still, bubbles rise from the reef in slow, counted breaths, and the tail curls once around them and lets them go.
