Owl and red mushrooms on a limb

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon-style owl with large, heavy-lidded eyes sits in the centre, perched beside red toadstool mushrooms with white spots. Behind it, brown curling branches and teal wisps form a loose background, with grey-blue leaves and berries framing the lower edges. Bold, saturated colour with smooth shading on the owl's plumage gives the piece a rounded, illustrative finish.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm kept the sheep at Saint Edric's, and every evening he counted them through the gate, and every evening the number came out wrong. Nine hundred and twelve, he would say, and the owl on the north wall would shift its feathers and look at him with those heavy lids as if he had said something foolish.

The old cellarer said it was the owl's doing, and the owl's doing was the lamp's fault for drawing it. Brother Anselm did not believe in owls that took sheep, but he did believe in arithmetic, so one evening he went out past the last hurdle with a lantern and followed the bird into the wood. The trees there stood grey in a teal mist that curled between the trunks as if the wood were breathing out. The ground was ringed with red toadstools, their white spots bright as dropped coins, and blue berries hung from the thorn like small lamps.

The owl landed on a root and waited. Beneath it lay a ewe, not dead, only sleeping the way those sleep who have wandered too far and are ashamed of it. Anselm lifted her, and she woke and bleated, and the owl blinked once, slowly, and turned its head toward the gate.

At dawn he counted at the gate. Nine hundred and thirteen. He did not tell the cellarer. Some sums, he decided, were better left to the wood, and the owl on the wall gave a low, satisfied note as he went in to say his prayers.
