Neo-trad woman with roses and feather
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A bold line drawing of a woman's face with heavily made-up eyes and a single tear falling from each eye, framed by a feather headpiece, large roses and swirling curls. A cameo hangs from the lower left, and the linework is dark blue on cream paper with fine hatching in the hair and feather. The composition is centred on the face, with the flowers and hair filling the rest of the frame.

You are fourteen floors down in the Vesper Hall when the lights on Ring Three dim for the third time this week, and the audience, who have paid in grain tokens, do not stop talking. The stage manager, a sallow man called Ossory, hands you the feather headpiece without looking at you. It is the one with the split quill, the one your mother wore when the hall still had a roof that did not leak.

The cameo is the trouble. Nobody on Ring Three has seen a real carved shell in forty years, but you wear it anyway, a little cameo woman in relief at the end of a chain, and when you press it the way she taught you, the clasp gives a click like a held breath. Between songs you sit in the wings with the roses pinned in your hair, the dried ones, their petals gone the colour of old paper, and you practise what she said: a face is only a door, so keep it shut when the room is hungry.
The song is an old one about a harbour that no longer exists, and by the second verse the kohl your mother taught you to lay on thick begins to run, as it always does, two dark lines down toward your chin. Ringside, a boy in a grey boiler suit lifts his hand as if to wipe his own cheek. You let the tears go. Nobody on this ring has paid to see you dry.
When the last note dies, Ossory is waiting with a towel and the usual question about the generator. You tell him it can wait. You unhook the cameo, close your fingers around the little carved woman, and walk back through the corridor where the pipes sing in the walls. Somewhere above, the ring's lights come up one by one, and the petals in your hair let go, one at a time, onto the floor.
