Nested outline triangles on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows two thin black outline triangles, one slightly offset inside the other, both pointing downwards. The linework is even and crisp with no shading, and the ink is black on a light skin tone. The wrist is held up with a gold and white link watch strap below the tattoo, and the background is a patterned rug with a teal top and denim visible to the left.

The brass bolt had been turned by the wind, so you knelt on the wet scree and worked the plate free with your penknife. Two triangles had been punched into the metal, both pointing down the slope towards the valley, one nested inside the other and sitting a little to the left, as though it had slipped. Surveyors did not mark benchmarks that way. Your father never did, and he had set more of them on this range than anyone alive.

The notebook in your coat said otherwise. Its pages were soaked at the corners and the pencil had gone grey, but the entry for August 1931 was plain: Ruth Calloway, chainman, cairn at the col to be struck true south. Nothing else. You had walked the pass for three days with her figures in your head, counting paces and trusting the old angles, and the angles kept insisting the col sat higher than the map allowed.

By afternoon the cloud lifted and you saw it. The snowfield on the north face had shrunk back, and under the grey ice ran a line of stones laid in a neat zigzag, a path someone had built before the glacier came down over it. The inner triangle, you realised, had never been a mistake. It pointed to where the path went under, and the outer one pointed to where you should dig.

You dug until your fingers bled through the gloves, and at two feet the spade rang on iron. Ruth had left her theodolite in a biscuit tin, wrapped in oilcloth, with a note folded beneath the lid: Measured twice. Trust the small one.
