Arrow tattoos on two fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two fingers are pressed together against a blue background. The finger on the left has a small arrow in light, near-white ink running across its length, while the finger on the right has a vertical black arrow with a simple triangular head and feathered tail. The linework is thin and solid, with no shading, and the composition is close and slightly warm in tone.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every morning the lift at Calder House stopped at the ninth floor and waited, because the old woman on nine had told the caretaker it was owed. Nobody argued with her. She kept a tin of spent matches and a bag of bent nails, and she had a way of looking at a person until they forgot what they had come to ask.

Her two grandsons, Ansel and Pim, were given the same advice the year the flats were painted grey: go where the wind sends you, but come back by the bells. Ansel went down the stairs and out past the bins to the canal. Pim stayed on the roof, where the aerials hummed, and learned to read the weather from the pigeons.

The story goes that the old woman took a stub of chalk from the playground and drew an arrow on Ansel's finger as he left, pointing away from the block, so the city would know where he was bound. She drew a dark one on Pim's, pointing down, so the stairwell would hold him fast. Neither boy liked it, and both kept their hands in their pockets for a month.

Years went by. Ansel's arrow faded to a pale line that only showed in the rain, and Pim's stayed dark. When the lift finally failed for good, Pim walked down nine floors with his hand held out in front of him, and found his brother sitting on the bottom step with the same pale mark, having come back by the bells. The old woman was gone. The tin of matches sat on the windowsill, and every nail had been straightened.
