Geometric arrow tattoo on forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small arrow-like design sits on the forearm, built from stacked chevron lines pointing up towards a diamond shape in the centre. The linework is solid and uniform in dark ink, with no shading. The tattoo is shown in soft natural light against a blue fabric and bare legs, with a silver bracelet with a blue stone above it.

They say the arrows were first cut into the lintel of Marrow Lane school the winter the river rose over the bridge, though the old pupils never agreed on the year. Mrs Ansell, who taught the infants for forty-one years, insisted her grandmother had done it with a penknife, one chevron for every child who got across the flood path and up the hill road safely. The points all faced uphill, because the water never went that way.

The reunion was held in the school hall in October, with trestle tables and a tea urn that kept tripping its fuse. Ruth Pardoe, who had left at fifteen to work the looms, found the same arrow scratched into the end of a coat peg, the diamond in its centre cut down to a small hollow square. Walter Hobb, the caretaker, said a stone had sat in that hollow once, blue as a winter sky, until a boy took it in 1962 and posted it back a year later in a shoebox with a note that said only, sorry about the river.

After the urn gave up, Ruth walked the old road up the hill with a dozen of them, following the chevrons painted on fence posts by somebody's father long ago. Nobody spoke much. At the top, where the road bent past the chapel wall, the last arrow was carved into the stone so deep that the rain had filled it. The diamond there was not hollow. Someone had set a pebble into it, grey and ordinary, and it was dry.

Ruth pressed her thumb against it, then turned and took the road home, keeping the points in front of her. It was the only way she had ever known how to go down a hill in the dark.
