Never forget swallow, watch and rose design
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A red linework tattoo design on a grey background, showing a pocket watch at the centre with a swallow in flight on the left and a rose on the right. A banner across the top reads Never Forget and a second banner below reads Where you're from. The lines are bold and even, with no shading, and the composition is centred and symmetrical.

Sit down, sit down, the swallows are gathering and they won't wait for anyone. Look at them on the telegraph wire by the lane, forty or fifty of them, shuffling like old men at a bus stop. My grandfather kept bees in this orchard, and he swore the birds knew the day to leave better than any almanac in the county. Every late August he would walk the rows with his pocket watch open in his palm, saying the birds were only keeping time the way the rest of us did.

The watch had belonged to his father, who worked the cider press and never once owned a clock that kept true. Its face had worn to a grey ghost, but the hands still moved when you wound the little crown. One year the cannery down the valley shut its doors, and the families scattered, to Leeds and Bristol, and one cousin to a ship bound for Halifax. Grandfather stayed. He said somebody had to be the wire the birds came back to.
The last morning before the swallows went, he pressed the watch into my hand and folded my fingers over it. Hold it to your ear, he said. Hear that? That's the sound of getting on with it. I was twelve and thought it a daft thing to say. Now I'm the one at the gate with a bag and a train ticket, and the rose he planted by the back step is still there, red as a shout.
Never you mind the rest, he said as I went. Whatever the road does to you, you know where you're from. The birds came back to that wire the following spring, and so did I.
