Never look back script on upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up photograph from behind shows the words Never look back written in a thin, flowing black script across the upper back, just below the nape of the neck. The linework is fine and even, with the letters joined by smooth connecting strokes and no shading. The background is a black top with cut-out detailing and pink bra straps, with warm, slightly faded tones in the lighting.

The ewes have lambed early this year, which Dad says is the mild wind's fault and I say is the ewes' own business. I'm writing this on the back of a feed invoice because your old tin of pencils is still on the kitchen table and I can't bring myself to move it.

You'll remember Dad's rule. Never look back, he'd shout across the top field when the dog got tangled in the brambles or the tractor sulked at the gate. Walk on, the work's in front of you. You took that to Leeds like a coat you were meant to grow into. I took it as a challenge, mostly.

Last Tuesday the snow came down so thick the lane disappeared, and I went out to the barn for a bale of hay. Under the tarp I found the shoebox of postcards you swore you'd send from every bus station café you passed. I sat on the bale with snow soaking through my boots and read them all in order, and not once did I feel I was breaking the rule. Dad would have called it sentiment. Perhaps it is.

So I've left the back gate open, the one that squeals. If I walked out now, the prints would run straight from the house to the road and nowhere else. Come home for the lambing, Tom. Look back at the field all you like. I'll be the one standing in it.
