Dear Ada, we pitched on the Stour water meadows on Tuesday and the mud has already swallowed two of the caravan steps. Father has given up trying to keep the portrait booth dry, so I sit under the striped awning doing faces for pennies, and that is how I came to paint the quiet one.

He arrived after the lamps were lit, a tall grey shape in a black coat, with a white mask for a face and nothing on it but two dark eyes. He asked for a portrait and offered a gold nugget for it. I did not want it, but he set it on the board and would not take it back. I put him in the oval frame Father bought off a bankrupt chapel, the one with the scrolls, and I drew the soot creatures into the corners the way the children always ask for them.

Here is the odd part. Every soot creature I drew stayed where I put it, but by morning two had crept to the edge of the cloth beside the cash tin, and a smear of red had leaked into the mask where I had used the wrong brush. The stranger has not come back. I did not sell the picture. Last night I hung it inside the caravan door, and this morning there was a fresh gold scrap on the step, bright as a coin, with no footprints anywhere near it.

I think I will keep the frame and the nugget and pack the paints tonight. Tell Mother I am eating properly.
