Cartoon monster in green slime on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A cartoon monster with a white, elongated head, yellow eyes, black lashes and red lips sits inside an oval frame. The bold black outlines and flat fills are typical of cartoon-style tattoo work. Bright green slime drips from the edge of the frame, and the colours are saturated against the pale skin of the calf.

Nobody in Mossgrave believes me when I say I was once the most frightening thing in the palace, but the evidence hangs on the east wall, in a gilt frame the queen refuses to polish. I am the face in the glass. Forty years of royal fingerprints have taught me to keep my lashes curled and my lips shiny, because the court only screams at a monster who has made an effort.

The trouble began when the new steward, Master Pell, hung a fresh border of slime around me to keep me in. It was meant as a warning. It was, in fact, the finest thing that had ever happened to my complexion. Green ooze runs down the gilt in glossy ribbons, and I can taste it when I lick my lips, which is how I know the frame is still wet and I am still mostly inside.

On the night of the Feast of Lesser Teeth, the queen came to me alone with a pot of rouge and a sorrowful face. Her son had been swallowed by the moat drains. Could I help? I could. I slid one long white arm past the slime, plucked the boy from a drainpipe with two fingers, and set him on the marble, dripping and furious and very much alive. The queen wept. I asked only for the rouge.

Pell has not yet decided whether to repaint the frame. Every morning I check. The green is still shining, the lashes still perfect, and the queen still sends up a fresh pot with a note that says Wear it well. I do, with my red mouth open, waving one black-clawed hand at the room like a bored duchess at a garden party.
