Cartoon cat in ornate frame on thigh

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon cat character wearing a pointed hat and a pink patterned dress holds a small plush bear with a flower on its head. The figure sits inside an oval cameo with a teal background, dotted white border and an elaborate gold scrolled frame. Bold outlines, flat colour fills and soft shading give it a clean, illustrative finish, photographed on a thigh against a light background.

The Lantern Ballroom at Saltmarsh smelled of floor wax and wet wool by half past nine, and Dolly Achterberg had already danced with three men whose names she'd forgotten before the band reached the chorus. She was waiting for Frank Nolan, who had promised her a waltz and then gone for lemonade that never came back. Her pointed felt hat, bought for the winter fair, kept slipping over one ear, and the plush bear she had won at the coconut shy sat in the crook of her arm like a chaperone with no interest in dancing.

Across the floor, Mrs Pell was painting miniatures at a card table under the balcony, a trade she had kept up since her husband's boat went down off Filey. For a shilling she would paint anyone a cameo in an oval frame, and she worked fast, a fine brush sweeping gold scrolls while the band played a slow number. Dolly had sat for her an hour earlier, talking about the dress she'd sewn from a remnant of pink cotton, and Mrs Pell had listened the way she listened to everything, with her head on one side.

When Frank finally reappeared, two lemonades slopping over his knuckles, the painting was already drying on the card table. Dolly held it up to the lantern light: a white cat in a pointed hat and a pink dress, cradling its bear, the teal sky behind them dotted with small white stars. Mrs Pell had given the cat a look of perfect composure, as though it had been the one waiting all night and had decided that was perfectly fine.

"You'll want to dance now," Frank said. Dolly tucked the miniature into her glove and let him lead her out, bear and all. She would keep the picture in her drawer for forty years, but for the length of one waltz she was exactly as composed as the cat.
